Costume designer Judianna Makovsky would be the first to admit that Maggie Smith had a hand in the look of Professor Minerva McGonagall. “Dame Maggie offered her own ideas, which were quite wonderful. She wanted something that was Scottish, so she wears a Scottish tam, traditionally made with a band and feather, but it just happens to be a witch’s hat. She also has her own tartan, which is, of course, green,” Makovsky says. To complete her ensembles, McGonagall’s robes are ornamented with Celtic-inspired brooches and pins.
